Medicare Supplement Insurance Across Illinois, Indiana & Wisconsin

Turning 65 Should Feel

Like a Milestone, Not a Maze

Adults approaching Medicare eligibility typically receive mail from dozens of insurance companies in the months before their 65th birthday. Every carrier claims to offer the best plan. Most of that material is designed to generate a phone call to a sales center — not to help you understand what you're actually buying.

The number of Medigap plans available varies by county and state — but across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana, the abundance of options is the primary source of confusion for first-time Medicare shoppers. The plans within each letter designation are standardized by federal law — Plan G from one carrier covers the same benefits as Plan G from another — but the premiums vary significantly across carriers for identical coverage. Knowing which carrier prices a given plan most competitively for your age, zip code, and health profile requires a side-by-side comparison that a single carrier's website cannot produce.

That is what an independent Medicare supplement agent does. And it costs you nothing — agents are compensated by the carrier, not the consumer.

Understanding Medicare

Before Choosing a Supplement

Most adults approaching 65 are shopping for Medicare supplement coverage before they fully understand the Medicare structure it supplements. The confusion is understandable — the terminology is dense and the system has multiple moving parts.

A clear picture of how the tiers work:

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is federal health coverage that begins at 65 for most Americans. Part A covers hospital inpatient care. Part B covers outpatient services, physician visits, and preventive care. Original Medicare covers approximately 80% of approved medical costs — the remaining 20% has no annual cap, which is the core financial risk a supplement addresses.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) is private insurance that covers some or all of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind — deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Medigap plans are standardized by federal law and labeled by letter (Plan A through Plan N). Benefits within each letter plan are identical regardless of carrier. Premiums are not.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private insurance alternative to Original Medicare that bundles Parts A, B, and often D into a single managed care plan. Medicare Advantage plans typically have lower premiums than Medigap but use networks — meaning your providers must participate in the plan's network for coverage to apply.

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage, available as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare and Medigap, or bundled into a Medicare Advantage plan.

Most buyers are choosing between two fundamentally different approaches: Original Medicare plus a Medigap supplement and Part D, or Medicare Advantage. The right choice depends on your healthcare use, your providers, your medications, and your premium tolerance — not on which approach a carrier's advertisement promotes.

Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage The Real Difference

This is the decision most adults approaching 65 need to make first, before comparing any specific plan.

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare. There are no provider networks — any provider who accepts Medicare accepts your Medigap coverage, nationwide. Benefits are standardized and predictable. Premiums are higher, but out-of-pocket costs are low and capped by the plan structure. Medigap travels with you anywhere in the country where Medicare is accepted.

Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan. Premiums are often lower — sometimes zero beyond the Part B premium — but cost-sharing applies at the point of service, and provider networks restrict which doctors and hospitals are covered at full benefit. Out-of-pocket maximums vary by plan and can be substantial.

For anyone with established relationships with specific physicians or specialists, verifying network participation is the critical first step in any Medicare Advantage comparison. For those who travel frequently or spend part of the year in another state — including clients who split time between Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana — Medigap's nationwide provider access is a significant practical advantage.

We walk through this distinction with every Medicare client before comparing any specific plan options.

Medicare Supplement

Protections Worth Knowing

Illinois provides certain Medicare supplement protections that are more favorable than the federal minimum

a fact that matters for buyers who are concerned about health history affecting their eligibility.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois offers guaranteed issue Medicare supplement coverage regardless of health status, year-round — not only during the federal Open Enrollment Period. This protection is specific to BCBSIL under Illinois state law and provides a meaningful option for Illinois residents who missed their initial enrollment window or whose health has changed since they first enrolled in Medicare.

For buyers in good health enrolling during the standard Open Enrollment Period — the six-month window that begins on the first day of the month in which you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B — guaranteed issue applies universally across all carriers. After that window closes, underwriting typically applies for most carriers other than BCBSIL under Illinois law.

Enrolling during the Open Enrollment Period at the right time is one of the most consequential Medicare decisions a person makes. We help clients identify that window and ensure the application is submitted within it.

Right for Illinois Residents?

Plan G covers everything Original Medicare leaves behind except the Part B deductible. After the annual Part B deductible is met, Plan G covers 100% of approved costs with no copayments or coinsurance. It is the most comprehensive Medigap option available to new Medicare enrollees and provides the most predictable out-of-pocket cost structure.

Plan N covers most of what Plan G covers, with two differences: a copayment of up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in inpatient admission. Plan N premiums are lower than Plan G — making it a viable option for buyers who want broad coverage at a lower monthly cost and are comfortable with modest point-of-service cost-sharing.

Plan F provides the most comprehensive coverage available — including the Part B deductible — but is only available to buyers who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before that date and are still on Plan F, an annual premium review is worth doing — many Plan F holders are overpaying relative to Plan G alternatives.

Federal law standardizes what each Medigap letter plan covers. The most commonly purchased

plans in Illinois for adults entering Medicare today are Plan G and Plan N.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare Supplement Insurance

  • What is the best Medicare supplement plan in Illinois, Wisconsin, or Indiana?

Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap option available to new Medicare enrollees and is the most commonly purchased plan today. Plan N offers comparable coverage at a lower premium with modest copayments. The right plan depends on your expected healthcare use, premium tolerance, and whether predictability or lower monthly cost is the priority. We compare both options across available carriers for your specific zip code and state.

  • How do I find an independent Medicare supplement agent?

Prime Insurance Agency serves Medicare-eligible adults across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. As an independent agent, we compare Medigap plans across multiple carriers at no cost to you — carrier compensation covers the agent fee. Call (630) 539-0123 to get started.

  • What is the difference between Medicare supplement and Medicare Advantage?

Medicare supplement works alongside Original Medicare with no provider networks and standardized benefits. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that includes network restrictions and variable cost-sharing. The right choice depends on your providers, medications, travel habits, and premium tolerance. We walk through both before recommending either.

  • When should I sign up for Medicare supplement?

The optimal window is the six-month Open Enrollment Period beginning the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this window, guaranteed issue applies — no carrier can deny coverage or charge more based on health history. After the window closes, underwriting applies for most carriers. Protections vary by state — confirm what applies in Illinois, Wisconsin, or Indiana with your agent.

  • How do I compare Medigap plans in my area?

Medigap plan benefits are standardized by letter — Plan G from one carrier covers the same benefits as Plan G from another. What varies is the premium. A side-by-side carrier comparison for your age, gender, and zip code identifies which carrier prices a given plan most competitively. We run that comparison for every client across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

  • Does working with an independent Medicare agent cost me anything?

No. Independent Medicare supplement agents are compensated by the carrier — not the consumer. The plan premium is identical whether you purchase through an agent or directly from the carrier. The agent provides the comparison and guidance at no additional cost to you.
