Chicago is the place to be for St. Patrick’s Day in 2013. The city of Chicago has a large Irish population who know how to celebrate the holiday right. Fun events take place all over the city, from the family friendly St. Patrick’s Day Parade to parties for all types of crowds. For more information about the best events to attend on St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago, keep in touch with Concierge Preferred.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place every year on the Saturday before the holiday at the Chicago Loop. The parade begins at noon, after the Chicago River is dyed green at 10 a.m. The parade is about three hours long, so bring snacks. Food will be available at the event but you won’t want to lose your spot! The weather may be chilly so dress appropriately and consider bringing an umbrella, just in case.

The parade is fun for the whole family with lots of colorful floats. However, it is important to note that thousands of people attend the event so be sure to arrive early. With so many in attendance, parking is extremely limited and can be expensive so consider taking public transportation to save yourself some time and money. The Red and Blue Lines will take you right to the Loop stops, while the Brown, Green and Orange Lines will take you to the Wabash stops. Both the Chicago Metra and the Chicago buses will also be transporting passengers to the parade.

The Best Bars for St. Patrick’s Day

Wrigleyville is a great place to check out if you’re not looking for something authentically Irish. Bars such as Harry Caray’s, Goose Island, the Cubby Bear, Johnny O’Hagan’s and Galway’s Arms will have a mostly college crowd and cheap beer.

The Loop contains a number of Irish pubs within and around its borders. Bars such as Fado Irish Pub, O’Callaghan’s, and Poag Mohone’s host large St. Patrick Day parties. The Irish American Heritage Center will provide you with an authentic Irish experience and a party with traditional dancing, food and of course, beer.

If you’re not necessarily looking for St. Patrick’s Day festivities and just want a place to get a good beer, check out the Long Room in Lakeview and Quencher’s in Bucktown.
